Head Men's Basketball Coach

The Lutheran High School Association of St. Louis is seeking to hire a Head Men’s HS Basketball Coach at its Lutheran North Middle and High School campus.  Lutheran North is a diverse educational community whose unity is in Jesus Christ. About this position: 
  • This position could stand alone or may be combined with a teaching role if the candidate’s qualifications meet the school’s need. 

Summary of Duties and Areas of Responsibilities:  
  • Oversees the entire men’s basketball program which includes JV, freshmen, and middle school teams.  
  • Coaches individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.
  • Plans and schedules a regular program of practice in season.
  • Works closely with the athletics director in scheduling interscholastic contests.
  • Enforces disciplined and sportsmanlike behavior at all times, and establishes and oversees penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.
  • Instructs players in the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
  • Organizes and directs individual and small group practice activities/exercise.
  • Assesses player’s skills; monitors players during competition and practice.
  • Determines game strategy.
  • Supervises athletes before, during and after practices and competition.
  • Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury.
  • Models exemplary Christian behavior and maintains appropriate conduct toward players, officials, and spectators.
  • Recommends purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms, as appropriate.
  • Distributes and collects equipment, supplies, and uniforms to students.
  • Submits list of award winners at the end of the season.
  • Participates in special activities to include parent’s night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
  • Performs support tasks such as distributing and maintaining eligibility forms, emergency data cards, and other related records.
  • Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with parents and community stakeholders/members.
  • Develops a relationship with coaches from the feeder Lutheran schools and recruits their athletes.
  • Organizes an offseason training program, sets up a schedule for team camps, and summer league play.
  • Attends coaching seminars, workshops, and  researches  to stay current with the latest coaching strategies to improve his/hers coaching skills.
  • Utilizes social media to promote the team, school, and players in a positive Christian way.
  • Oversees each athlete’s behavior and academic success in the classroom and works with the Dean of Students to nurture the student athlete.
  • Keeps accurate stats to share with local media and interested college recruiters, and update school records.
 
  • Qualifications:
  • Espouse and minister in accordance with the school’s philosophy of Christian education and the Lutheran church (LCMS).
  • Excited to share his or his faith and develop strong Christian relationships on and off the court
  • Excited to work in a diverse, urban setting 
  • Possesses a current teaching or substitute certificate with 60 or more college credits earned.
  • 3+ years’ experience as a head basketball coach at the high school or college level preferred.
  • Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills. Must possess knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.
  • Must be able to pass background screening including fingerprinting.
