Experience in the Recording Studio

In June, six current and former Lutheran North Concentus singers were asked to record an original song in the studio for Christian Tools of Affirmation. The song, “Starry, Starry Night,” a Christmas-themed song that combines the story of Creation and the birth of Jesus, was recently released to the public.

The experience required special training for the six singers from Concentus, Lutheran North’s select choir, some of whom were recent graduates. Paige Liszewski (LHSN '18), Heather Meyer (LHSN '15), Jenna Fackler (LHSN '16), Lily Kate Burreson (LHSN '18), Dallis Johnson (LHSN '17), and Alexa Halliburton (LHSN '18) met together to prepare.

“In order to prepare for this original recording the girls needed to rehearse on their own and together to learn the three-part harmony,” Choir Director Carolyn Rusnak said. “Besides singing, the song called for the use of handbells. Some of the girls had never used handbells before, but they caught on quickly.”

This was the second time Concentus singers were utilized for the CTA recording. Giving high school musicians a professional recording experience rounds out their understanding of vocal performance. According to the singers, it’s also a lot of fun.

“Singing in a recording studio was an amazing experience. I mean, how many high school students can say they've done that?” Lily Kate Burreson (LHSN ’18) said. “It was a bit overwhelming at first to see all the equipment, but after getting settled in it was a lot of fun!”

The song is available on the CTA website as a resource for churches and children’s choirs, along with sheet music and accompaniment music. The girls hope the song is a blessing to everyone who uses it.

“Lutheran North as a community has helped each student to show God's love and kindness in every situation,” Lily Kate said. “It is amazing to think that my voice, among others, might inspire children. I am truly blessed to have had this experience!”
